Library Kiosk

Research, Design Ethnography, and Video Prototype

Overview

In my class CS 570: Intro to Human-Computer Interaction we were tasked with doing a design ethnography and creating a design for a technology a user could physically interact with. The goal of this project was to practice different UX research methods as well as to come up with a design that isn't necessarily just an app or website but a technology that required other physical interactions (ie. a SmartBoard). Two other group members and myself observed and interviewed library workers at MERIT Library. We took field notes, snapshots, and collected video data of the tasks and came up with the idea for a library kiosk. We then created a short video prototype that demonstrated how it could be used.

Problem

How do we make it easier for librarians to provide help and resources to patrons?

Solution

A self-help kiosk. We wanted to be able to have a design that checked out books and helped patrons with other questions and services that they may need. That way, librarians would essentially have an extra set of helping hands without needing to stop their own work or get distracted.
